Dobbs Ferry Schools Closed, Businesses Open After Sandy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - The Village of Dobbs Ferry was energy-divided Wednesday in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, with the downtown area along Cedar and Main streets seemingly untouched and residential areas without power in several neighborhoods.

Dobbs Ferry public schools were closed for the third day and the district will notify residents about opening or further closures Wednesday evening. Notices will be posted on the district website.

Wednesday's Halloween Trick-Or-Treat on Main Street has been rescheduled and will be held Friday from 4 to 6 p.m.

According to the village website notices, approximately 75 percent of village residents were without power Wednesday morning. Residents are asked to report outages to the village police at 693-5500, as well as to Con Edison.

Several homes in Dobbs Ferry were severely damaged by falling trees Monday but no injuries were reported. The waterfront parking lot adjacent to the Metro north train station will remain closed until further notice. Due to the tidal surge, there are logs and other debris, which floated into the lot making it unsafe. 

Village offices are closed Wednesday, but there will be some garbage and Wednesday recycling pickup. Most of the downtown business community was up and running Wednesday, including Reader's Hardware, neighborhood delis, coffee shops, restaurants and other businesses. The Dobbs Ferry Stop & Shop at the intersection of Ashford Avenue. and Broadway was also open for business from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Two two gas stations at the intersection of Broadway and Ashford Avenue are also opened for business. Several small businesses along Ashford Avenue are closed to to lack of power.
