Rain Washes Out Some Fairfield County Parades, Changes Memorial Day Plans

Updated: FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — A weather forecast calling for rain and possible thunderstorms has thrown a wrench into some carefully made plans in some towns in Fairfield County.

Yes, you can enjoy your hot dogs and hamburgers on Monday — but you may have to cook and eat indoors.

And don't forget to salute the men and women who have died serving our country. Many events and parades were planned in towns and cities across Fairfield County, but some were canceled by Sunday evening. Others were waiting until Monday morning to decide whether to go forward. And some events will go on rain or shine. 

The following is a sample of planned events. Check before you head out. Please email photos to the Daily Voice of any Memorial Day events you attend.

Greenwich:

The Sound Beach Volunteer Fire Department parade has been canceled. A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. at Binney Park dependent on weather, organizers said.

Darien:

The town says its events are rain or shine: The parade will held at 10 a.m., beginning at the Goodwives Shopping Center on Old Kings Highway North and continue to Spring Grove Cemetery, where a ceremony will be held.

New Canaan:

The town will shorten its Memorial Day parade — with participation optional — and hold the annual ceremony inside Town Hall.

The parade will step off from St. Mark's at 9:30 a.m. and proceed down Main Street to St. John’s Place, then up to Park Street and turn to Town Hall for a ceremony at 10:15 a.m. 

Norwalk:

The parade has been canceled due to the rainy forecast.

Westport:

The parade in Westport has been canceled. The memorial service will be held in the Westport Town Hall starting at 10 a.m.

Fairfield:

The town has canceled its parade.

Bridgeport:

There will be a parade beginning at 10 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park.

Stratford:

The parade is canceled in Stratford.

Shelton:

The town says its events are rain or shine: The Derby-Shelton Memorial Day Parade will take place at 9 a.m. beginning on Howe Avenue at the Intersection of Route 8 in Shelton and concluding at the corner of Elizabeth Street and Cottage Street in Derby.

Trumbull:

Despite the forecast, the town will hold a ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at 7 a.m., followed by an all-wars memorial ceremony at Town Hall at 8:30 a.m. But the parade set for 10 a.m. has been canceled due to the rain.

Easton:

The parade has been canceled. But the seventh Annual Exchange Club Mile Run will still be held at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Also, American Legion members plan to visit Easton’s cemeteries at 3 p.m. and conduct memorial services.

Weston: 

Officials in Weston have canceled the parade. 

Memorial presentations will be made instead in the Town Hall meeting room at 11:30 a.m. Residents can call 203-454-1161 after 9 a.m. for details.

Newtown:

There will be a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. at the VFW Post 308 at 18 Tinkerfield Road.

Danbury:

Mayor Mark Boughton said the parade has been canceled.

Ridgefield:

The parade has been canceled.

Wilton:

The parade has been canceled.
