Sandra Bernhard Sizzles at Ridgefield Playhouse

Comedian Sandra Bernhard's combustible humor typically torches the absurdities of celebrity culture and pompous political figures. Sometimes, she even lights a match to her own ego. You can see how hot she burns when she brings her new one-woman show, "I Love Being Me, Don't You?" to Ridgefield Playhouse on May 28. An actress and author as well as comedian, Bernhard launched her take-no-prisoners stand up career in the 1970s at Hollywood's famed Comedy Store. Using her own incendiary material, she quickly gained attention since no one else faced the world quite like she did. The NY Times wrote about her, “Give the dame her due. It's invigorating to be in the presence of a true original.”

After a TV stint on "The Richard Pryor Show," Bernhard crafted another original performance, playing a stalker-kidnapper in Martin Scorcese's 1983 film, "The King of Comedy." It won her the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Subsequently, she's carved out parallel career trajectories, live performances in her one-woman stage shows, such as 1988's acclaimed "Without You I'm Nothing, With You I'm Not Much Better" which also became a film and TV roles, including one as Nancy Bartlett on the long-running hit sitcom "Roseanne." Whereever she goes, Bernhard's absurdiist take on things catches fire with fans for good reason. As WCBS put it, "“[She's a] performer of stunning originality. Funny but foxy, super smart and slightly mad!” Her show at Ridgefield Playhouse begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $37.50. For more information, visit the Playhouse's webiste.
