WILTON, Conn. Aaron Ramsey was calm and quiet during his second court appearance after being charged with the murder of his father in their Wilton home.
Edward Ramsey, 73, was beaten and stabbed to death May 3 in his Signal Hill Road home. Howard Ehrling, Ramseys public defender, said Ramsey is devastated. His second court date was Tuesday in Stamford.
Two family members were involved with this one, so really, its just a tragedy for the town of Wilton, said Wilton Police Capt. John Lynch. Obviously justice in the sense of a criminal nature would be the court system, so justice would be served on the person responsible. But you know in life there is no justice in this case.
Ramsey, 22 and a graduate of Wilton High School, was being held at Bridgeport Correctional Center until his next court date of June 8. A transfer to the Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown was discussed for further mental health evaluation. He was also placed under a suicide watch.
At the next court date, Ehrling is expected to enter a not guilty plea and a request for a trial by jury. A similar request was made Tuesday, but the motion to hear pleas was denied by the judge until a competency exam could be completed.
In his arrest warrant, Ramsey was quoted as saying he was hearing voices and that the aliens were out to get him. The warrant also said Ramsey was told by the voices that his father had magic powers and can heal himself."
The continuation of the court dates allows the Wilton Police Department to gather the last of its evidence, including several forensics reports and the report from the medical examiner.
I just feel terrible for the family. I cannot imagine what they must feel like, any of them, said state Rep. Gail Lavielle, R-Wilton. I think we owe them their grief and some peace, and thats what Id most like to give to them.
Ramseys mother and brother were unavailable for comment in the court room. Friends who came in support declined to speak.
