Richard was born in West Warwick, R.I. on May 25, 1928. He graduated from Lockwood High School in 1946. In his senior year he was captain of the basketball team and class president. He went to college at the University of Rhode Island where he was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon and the honor society, graduating in 1950. Richard then went to Columbia University in New York City, graduating with a masters of finance degree in 1951.
He served in the U.S. Army and ended his Army career as a first lieutenant in the Finance Corps, stationed at the Pentagon. On his discharge from the Army, Perkins joined General Electric Co. and spent his career there. Initially, Richard started as a member of the audit staff and ended his career as a member of the corporate finance staff.
Richard moved his family to Silvermine in 1962, where he lived until he was admitted to Waveny Care Center in New Canaan in 2008. He had been a member of St. Mary's Church while a Norwalk resident, serving on the finance committee and the Bishop's Pre Cana Council. He was also a devoted member of Central Catholic High School's Parent Council. In retirement, Richard loved to play tennis, golf and bridge and was a longtime member of the Shore and Country Club and the Silvermine Golf Club.
Richard is survived by his wife of 50 years, Norma A. (Wylie) Perkins; children Steven Ryan Perkins (wife Beckie) of Alexandria, Va.; David Allen Perkins (wife Robin) of Charlotte, N.C; Mary Susan Perkins (wife Francine Esnes) of Fairfield; and Leslie Perkins DeCruccio, also of Fairfield. He also is survived by six grandchildren: sister-in-law Ann Perkins and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Claire (Perkins) Grimes, and a brother, Norman G. Perkins.
His family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 13 at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave, Norwalk. A Funeral Mass will be held at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 14 at St. Aloysius Church, 21 Cherry St. in New Canaan with burial to follow at St. John Cemetery, Norwalk.
