The incident began when the manager of Stop & Shop reported seeing two men leave the store without paying for items, the police report said. When the manager followed the suspects, they dropped the items and got into a vehicle, the report said.
A description of the vehicle was provided to police and it was later spotted on River Road. Police chased the suspects and stopped them in Norwalk at the Department of Motor Vehicles, where more stolen items were found in the car, police said.
Bridgeport resident Gregory Whren, 51, and Newtown resident Christopher Barocsi, 29, were each charged with sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny, misdemeanors.
Whren, the driver, was also charged with engaging police in pursuit and reckless driving. Each was held on a $10,000 bond.
The total amount of items stolen from Stop & Shop was still under investigation.
