WILTON, Conn. – Rolling Hills Country Club in Wilton will be allowed to use a ranch house on its property to host visiting workers – with some conditions.
The Wilton Planning and Zoning Commission voted Tuesday to approve the country club’s request for an amendment to its special use permit for the house off Hurlbutt Street. The club can house eight visitors there, many of them tennis and golf pros and hospitality staff.
The permit comes with conditions, including ensuring that the building has a house monitor who will be at least 21 years old. Rolling Hills will also plant trees in front of the home to provide for more privacy for neighbors, install a gate at the driveway and have visitors enter the property through the main entrance and park in a lot behind the house.
The parking condition, said Planning Director Robert Nerney, will reduce traffic at the house and prevent parking on the grass in front of it. “It would create more synergy between the club and house,” Nerney said Wednesday. “It ties the two uses together to have them use the main entrance.”
The commission closed its public hearing on the club’s request last month. A previous request to allow up to 12 people to stay in the house, located on the 157-acre property leased by the club from the Ambler Family Trust, was withdrawn after club officials decided it would not be approved because of planning commission concerns about traffic and the number of people staying there at one time.
Other country clubs in the area have on-campus housing for visiting workers and sports professionals.
Rolling Hills will need to get a zoning permit, which will be provided once the conditions are met, Nerney said.
