A suspect was able to gain control of DiJoseph's service weapon and shot him in the head.

"Officer DiJoseph was a family man who came to work every day and protected the kids and families of Bridgeport,” said Finch. “He gave his life doing that. He left behind his own kids. To Danielle, Jerrod, and Matthew, our city always will owe you a debt of gratitude. Your dad will not be forgotten."

A patrol car stationed at 65 James St. sounded its on Nov. 28 at 5:15 p.m., the time when DiJoseph was shot. The department conducted a moment of silence on the police radio in his memory.

"Like police officers in cities across the country, our officers risk their lives every day to protect kids and families of Bridgeport,” said Gaudett. “There aren't many people still on the job who worked with and remember Officer DiJoseph, but he will never be forgotten. He wore the same patch on his shoulders and protected and patrolled the same streets that our brave officers do today. He made the ultimate sacrifice.

“His wife, his kids, and his grand kids still do every day and we will continue to honor them."
