They were welcomed with a vocal performance by Madeleine Diamond and Brittany Taylor. Salutatorian Allyson Castellano then led the Pledge of Allegiance. Christian Arbour, Class Treaurer, was the master of ceremonies.
Principal Stacy Butkus greeted the crowd. “We are proud of the accomplishments and opportunities of these graduates,” Butkus said, telling the Class of 2016, “never forget those who helped you along the way. Your success is impeccable.”
Class President Jessica Butkus wished her classmates "all the best of luck in what you do." And Valedictorian Marissa Shamansky spoke.
“The one thing that I will miss the most is walking into this school. Always remember to take advantage of every opportunity and that out of bad things, good things happen,” Butkus told her classmates.
Mayor Mark Boughton told a story about a young man the same age as the graduating seniors. The man was in the military and had earned a Silver Star and a Purple Heart. Boughton, surprised by how much the man had accomplished at age 18, said the students should strive to accomplish as much as they can.
“I want you to think of this as your city, your state, and your country. This is the greatest place on earth,” Boughton said to cheers.
The presentation of the diplomas was given by Butkus, Assistant Principals Kevin Durkin and Ted Oczkowski, and Senior Class Advisers Katie Foley and Kristen Sura.
After the diplomas were given out, the graduates turned their tassels from right to left. They did not throw their caps, but instead turned to exit for their recessional.
Abbott Tech, a state-run technical high school, enrolls students from Bethel, Bethlehem, Woodbury, Bridgewater, Broofield, Danbury, Easton, New Milford, New Preston, Redding, Kent, Washington, Middlebury, Monroe, New Fairfield, Newtown, Oxford, Ridgefield, Roxbury, Sherman, Southbury, Weston, and Wilton.
