The certificates can lead to immediate employment as a phlebotomist, Certified Nurse Aid (CNA), Medical Billing Specialist, Personal Care Attendant, EKG Technician, Emergency Medical Technical (EMT) and more.
Career Connections also includes a Workforce Readiness class, career coaching, internships and job placement. Students will master the skills leading to an industry certification and learn how to write a resume, prepare for a job interview, and identify career interests and strengths.
Career Connections is an initiative of Thrive by 25 of the Fairfield County’s Community Foundation (FCCF). Last year, FCCF formally launched the Thrive By 25 initiative in order “to build pathways to success for young people.”
According to FCCF, there are 100,000 young people ages 16 to 24 living in Fairfield County. One in eight are unemployed — the 15th highest rate in the nation. Research shows that supporting young people as they transition from high school to the workplace increases their odds of adult success.
“Thrive by 25: Career Connections is a very special initiative because it provides free tuition and career services, and gives our youth access to good wages and pathways for career advancement,” said NCC President David L. Levinson, Ph.D.
Up to 50 students will be accepted for the year 2017. Preference will be given to those whose parents have not completed college. Applications received before Jan. 27 will be given first priority. Some classes begin in February.
This program is made possible in part by Fairfield County’s Community Foundation and the Norwalk Community College Foundation.
