Each athlete finished in the top at the USATF Region 1 Championship held at Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts.
WRC qualifiers for the national meet are Kyle Dobson, Alex Brichkowski, Ashley Nicoletti, Flynn Crowther and Shelby Dejana.
Dobson, a Norwalk resident, took second in the 13-14 long jump with a jump 17 feet, 11 inches. Dobson won the Western Connecticut Conference Middle School championship this past Spring with a leap of 18 feet which is a league record. He also won the Connecticut USATF championship in June with a jump of 17 feet, 3 inches.
Brichkowski, of Wilton, qualified with a second place finish in the 100M hurdles in 17.12 seconds and the 200M hurdles in 31.60. Brichkowski won both events in the Connecticut USATF championships in June.
Nicoletti, of Newtown, qualified in the 11-12 long jump with a jump of 13-7 to take fourth . Nicoletti has qualified for the national meet for three straight years. She won the 100 (13.73) and 200 (28.55) and well as second in the long jump at the Connecticut USATF championships in June.
Crowther placed fifth in the 13-14 800M to qualify for the nationals in a time of 2:14:24. Only .16 separated places third through fifth. Flynn keeps getting better year by year and meet by meet and his potential is tremendous. He has been a leader the past two years in our middle distance group and someone that everyone looks up too,'' coach Kevin Foley said. Crowther has chosen not to compete in the national event this year in favor of training for his first high school cross country season.
Dejana placed third in the 11-12 high jump with a height of 4-4. Dejana also made the finals of the 100M in a time of 13.74 and competed the day before in the five event pentathlon, where she placed fourth.
Shelby had quite a weekend and showed her athleticism as she PRd in both the 100M and high after a completing her first ever multi-event on Friday. It takes a lot of heart to compete seven events in two-days and do them all well,'' Foley said. 'Dejana is in her first year with the WRC and placed first in the Connecticut USATF championships in June in the high jump (3-11) and second in the 100 and 200 in 13.88 and 28.90 respectively. ' Crowther and Dejana live in Wilton.
Also competing in the Region 1 meet for the WRC were: Avery Martin (12th in the 9-10 800M), James Wise (16th in the 100M and 13th in the long jump for 9-10), John Wise (17th in the 100M and 11th in the long jump in 13-14), Lily Kealy (12th in the 200M in 13-14) and Tatum Kelly (14th in the 100M and 11th in the 200M in 13-14).
